Justice for Murdered Sex Workers: Call for Fair Sentencing and Decriminalisation

Sentencing procedures for Sifiso Mkhwanazi start tomorrow, 8 May 2024, after being found guilty of the murder and rape of six Johannesburg-based sex workers. We are calling for a fair and just sentence and outcome that underscores the value of sex worker lives. However, it’s deeply troubling that we find ourselves in a position where we must plea for equitable justice in cases involving violence against sex workers.

Had sex work been decriminalised as it rightfully should be, we wouldn’t be grappling with the tragic consequences of systemic marginalisation and discrimination. It’s a reminder of the urgent need to decriminalise sex work, not just for the sake of justice in individual cases, but to fundamentally uphold the rights and dignity of all individuals in the sex industry.

Decriminalisation isn’t just about legality; it’s about affirming the inherent worth and safety of every person, regardless of their occupation. Let’s use this moment not only to seek a fair sentence but also to renew our commitment to decriminalising sex work advocacy and ensuring justice for all.

SWEAT and Sisonke will be at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court tomorrow in support of the women who lost their lives; their family, friends, and colleagues – join us.
